Hong Kong stars who both act and sing are fairly common, but actress and singer
Sammi Cheng Sau Man has achieved a level of popularity that would be difficult for
most contenders in her field to duplicate.
While Sammi is currently one of the most bankable female stars in Hong Kong cinema,
she first entered the entertainment field as a pop singer. Performing numerous chart
topping love songs gave her the credibility with audiences to play in a dozen films
by 2002 -nearly all of them love stories.
Producers have paired Sammi Cheng with her male Cantopop colleagues in romances
repeatedly because the formula has proven so marketable. After the success of Needing
You (2000) a yuppie romance with Andy Lau, she and Andy were stuffed into fat suits
for another romance, Love on a Diet, a year later. Golden Harvest was so pleased with
the box office of Summer Holiday that they reunited Richie Ren and Sammi Cheng in
Marry a Rich Man. Sammi has also played opposite Leon Lai, Ekin Cheng, Louis
Koo and Tony Leung Chiu Wai in Hong Kong romance pictures.
At the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards, Sammi dominated the Best Actress category
by being nominated for three movies- a feat that had only been achieved previously by
HK superstar Chow Yun Fat. Though she didn't win, her 3 nominations, which put her
up against veteran actresses Anita Mui and Sylvia Chang, were an undeniable sign
of her well established starpower.
Sammi Cheng's music is featured in many of her films. An album compiling 17 movie
themes and soundtrack tunes from her own films was released in 2002; continuing
the tradition of the complementary marriage of Cantonese music and cinema.
