Joey Tan
(Tan Eng Li, Chan Ying Lai, Joey Chan)
Actress, Model
Born: 1976, Kedah, Alor Setar, Malaysia
After participating in the Miss Penang contest, part time model Joey Tan Eng Li
received the Malaysia Best Model Award in 1995, and held the title of Miss Malaysia
Chinatown from 1997-1998. Representing Malaysia in the 1998 Miss Chinese International
contest in Hong Kong, she walked away as a finalist. Yet when the half-Thai 22 year old
was featured in a couple of adult magazines and starred in a Category III Hong Kong film,
the Malaysian pageant organizers who sent her to Hong stripped her of her title, making
news throughout Asia.
Her layout as the January covergirl in the Hong Kong edition of Penthouse and rape
scenes with Mark Cheng depicted in Billy Chung's Trust Me U Die incited legal action
from the group. They claimed that Tan's activities had violated their exclusive three year
contact and were "calculated to bring discredit, disrepute, ridicule and contempt on
herself and the promoter".
Joey survived the controversy, however, learning to speak fluent Cantonese, making
more films in Hong Kong, and doing modelling and commercial shoots. In 2000, when
Jackie Chan invited actresses from across Asia to participate in his annual Macau
Grand Prix, Joey Tan raced for Malaysia and won 3rd place.
