(Ng Chun Yu)
Actor
Born: December 21, 1961
In over 80 films, Francis Ng has played off beat characters in a wide array of Hong
Kong material; inane comedies (Fake Emperor, From Zero To Hero), hardcore
action and crime (Bullets Over Summer, Full Alert), romance (Fall For You,
Bakery Amour), and straight drama (Till Death Do Us Part, A Queer Story).
Yet for years Francis Ng was still regarded as a second tier actor, so it came as a
surprise when he was given Taiwan's prestigious Golden Horse award for Best Actor
in 1999 over favored nominee Tony Leung Chiu Wai.
After receiving more recognition for his work, including a Best Supporting Actor
award for his appearance in 2000 AD, and directing and starring in two of his own films,
Chow Yun Fat commented that the future of Hong Kong film rests with Francis Ng...
Graduating from TVB's training course in 1985, Francis Ng's career began typically as
an actor in various serials. One of the more well known of these was Old Time Buddy,
a show about 1960's Cantonese cinema co-starring Gallen Lo in which Francis played
a role based on actor Patrick Tse. Despite the show's popularity, Francis was replaced
by Lam Ka Tung for the follow-up to the series; one of several factors (including low pay)
that embittered Ng towards his employer. Refusing a villain role which he found to be
ridiculous and a waste of his time, Ng publicly criticized TVB and wound up being
temporarily blacklisted by the network.
Due partially to script problems, Francis Ng's experimental low budget directorial efforts
have so far yielded unsatisfactory box office results. However, his partnership in a comedy
group with friends Cheung Tat Ming and Dayo Wong have been highly successful,
performing touring stage shows to sell out crowds. Besides acting, directing, and
stand up comedy, Francis has tried his hand at hosting, singing, and commentating
European soccer matches.
