(Wong Chau Sang, Wong Chow Sang, Wong Chow Sun)
Actor
Born: September 2, 1961- Hong Kong
Anthony Wong Chau Sang is an anomalous figure in the Hong Kong movie world.
With over 135 films to his credit, he is among the biggest names in the industry; a
fan favorite and a respected, award winning actor of fascination and versatility.
While Wong's capability as an actor is well established, it has not impeded him from
cranking out bad low budget exploitation by the barrellfull, whilst criticizing the merits
of the very industry that he has thrived on professionally. From giving photographers the
finger, to telling reporters that he threw his Hong Kong Film Award in the trash, it all just
adds to the legend of the unconventional personality that is Anthony Wong.

Anthony Wong's temperament can be traced to his childhood. As a child of mixed
parentage, he endured racial prejudice growing up in Hong Kong. His British father
abandoned him as a baby, so he took his Chinese mother's surname. As a young
man he enrolled in ATV's training program and later studied traditional theatre at the
Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. Though he claims to prefer the stage,
Wong's oeuvre as an actor would take form in his chilling film portrayals of real
and fictional madmen, cannibals, rapists and serial killers.
His most famous rendition of such a character was in The Untold Story, playing a
restauranteur who serves dumplings filled with ground human meat to unsuspecting
patrons. The role earned Wong his first Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, and
spawned sequels and spin offs, many involving its producer and co-star, Danny Lee.
In addition to film, television, and the theatre, Anthony Wong has pursued other creative
outlets, as both a rock musician and a disc jockey, co-hosting the radio program
'Banana Club' for Hong Kong's Metro Radio. Wong was fired from the gig after repeated
warnings to tone down the explicit content of the show. However, he soon adapted
the project into a film for his second directorial effort, Top Banana Club.
Anthony has released three music albums since 1995, which have provided further
opportunities to draw from his rock n' roll inspirations and convey his rebellious
social and political viewpoints.
In the late 1990's Anthony became seriously ill due to a glandular disease that caused
eye bulging and weight fluctuation, though his prolific output was somehow not significantly
affected, and he was still able to pull off another Best Actor Award for Beast Cops.
Wong, who is a married father of two sons, was in over 20 films in 2000 alone.
