The ever changing Anita Mui Yim Fong was Hong Kong's most enduring female superstar.
She began her career as a child, and entertained audiences up until the very last days
of her life. In her over 20 year career as an award winning singer and actress, Mui
attained a level of success seldom paralleled in Asia.

Anita Mui first achieved stardom as a singer in the early 1980's, capturing the attention
of Hong Kong's youth with her colorful clothing and mysterious, morose beauty.

It all started when Mui won the 1982 New Talent Contest for singing, and subsequently
recorded hit albums and theme songs to popular TVB series such as Soldier of Fortune
and The Rise and Fall of a Stand-In. Her songs topped the charts and broke sales records.
In 1984, she had a supporting role in the Shaw Brothers drama Behind the Yellow Line,
starring Leslie Cheung, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Award.
Anita Mui rose to prominence in the movie world as a star of many of Hong Kong cinema's
modern classics. In 1986, she played a semi-autobiographical role in the Michael Hui comedy
Chocolate Inspector, and appeared as herself in a cameo in Hui's Happy Din Don, where
she performed her popular rendition of "Careless Whisper".

In 1988 Mui starred with Leslie Cheung in Stanley Kwan's haunting romance Rouge, which
won her Best Actress Awards in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The following year she began her
acting partnership with good friend Jackie Chan with her role of an ambitious night club singer
in Miracles. In 1994, Mui, who was several years younger than Jackie, played a scene stealing
comedic role as Chan's mother in the renowned martial arts classic Drunken Master 2.
Mui gained many new fans with her action packed role as "Wonder Woman" in Johnnie To's
The Heroic Trio and the sequel, Executioners (both co-starring Maggie Cheung and
Michelle Yeoh).
Having made her mark on music and movies, Anita also devoted her energies to mentoring
future pop stars. Among the singers whom Anita has taken under her wing are Andy Hui,
Denise Ho Wan Si, dancer Samuel Pang and the HK trio Grasshopper. She also worked as
President of the Hong Kong Performing Artists Guild and released a lifestyle book for women.
In September 2003, Anita announced that she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer, but
vowed to fight the disease which had claimed her sister Ann Mui in April 2000. Sadly, on
December 30, 2003, Hong Kong lost another of its shining stars.
